Could someone explain overheating to me? I thought I was good to insulate and come back in 24 hours? So far I have never checked anything - just came back next day and removed and cut. ?? But so far all I have done is goats milk soap and shaving soap

Overheating is when the soap can separate. If you insulate and come back 24 hours later and it looks like regular soap, then you're fine. Separated soap can look like curds and whey and be caustic again. Sometimes rebatching helps, sometimes it doesn't.

I've been meaning to ask (before something like this does happen to me), but how do you safely dispose caustic soap or soap that has separated if it can't be saved?

In my research, I have read that recipes with high sugar content - honey for one - has the potential of overheating. Do you have to insulate soap if you are using something like that?

I don't insulate my honey and milk soaps. With my newer version of my fave recipe, I get cracked soap if I insulate any soap even on a warm day. I watch mine very closely, and as soon as it's gelled I uncover it, and pop it on a baking rack. This summer has been so mean to my soaps :(

Soaps with a high milk or sugar content don't need to be insulated, but some people insulate lightly. As soon as the soap is in full gel, they take any insulation off. If you are using a wooden mold, that acts as an insulator as it traps heat.

The soaps that I've added honey and/or milk to have always overheated - seems like before I even get them in the mold they're overheating and separating. I was thinking maybe I had the batch too warm or something. Once I have a cool laser thermometer and stick blender I may try again. I'm more interested in making honey soaps since there is a large, active beekeeping club in my area. I have access to bee product seconds so I want to figure out honey soap. I'll leave the goat milk soap to the people who have more goat milk than they can sell.

I don't remember the details now. I just know that I tried adding 4 ounces of honey at trace to a couple batches of soap. Both times the soap overheated almost immediately. The same thing happened when I added powdered milk. I decided to just give up on honey and milk until I have more experience.

I don't mind leaving the milk soap to the ladies with goats. I would like to use honey though. There is a large and enthusiastic group of bee keepers in my area and I would like to support their efforts by buying their honey.

I had this problem last year with my pumpkin spice soap and this year I have decided to thin trace and put it in the freezer.
