So, has anyone ever used brewed coffee in place of their water, or do you have to use coffee butter? Any special instructions in terms of how the lye reacts with the coffee?

Yes, I use the brewed coffee as my water and add the brewed grounds to the soap at trace. The lye will make the coffee smell really bad ( swamp gas ) for a while but the bad smell will go away later. Will you use an FO or EO with this soap? I always did, so I can't tell if the bad smell goes totaly away without FO or EO. I have a lot of loyal coffee soap users.

I have used a very strongly brewed coffee in place of water also, and yes, it smells REALLY bad when mixed with lye. I never added and FO's, just ground coffee at trace, and the smell if very subtle, if at all. The last time I made it, I used the Cafe du Monde coffee/chickory blend, and I liked that strength better

Regardless, the coffee grounds make for a really nice scrubby bar!
