9 weeks ago I made a batch of Lavender EO soap. After I cut the soap the next day, I noticed my hands smelled like ammonia. So I smelled the bars individually and they didn't smell as strong as my hands(of ammonia), and I could smell the Lavender 40/42 (from BB) stronger than the strange smell. I thought well just let it cure and forget about it until then. Well the smell hasn't faded, when you handle it to wrap it or use it is has the ammonia smell.
I'm thinking it is from the castor oil in the recipe. Any advise would be apperciated.
My recipe is:
Olive oil 35.4%
Coconut 33.9%
Palm 26.9%
Shea Butter 2.2%
Castor 1.5%
Lavender 40/42 EO from BB
Alkanet Rood Powder

Did you use goat's milk? If not, maybe it's the alkanet root. How much did you use?

I used 1/2tsp of alkanet root powder. 3 oz Lavender EO and 1.5 oz vanilla Fragrance oil. I just looked back at my batch notes. I had forgotten I mixed in the vanilla fo at the last minute. This is the first time I have mixed the two types of fragrance and eo. I am now guessing that is the problem. I think I was running low in lavender eo and tried this on the fly. Not a great idea in hind sight.

Sounds like it was the fragrance mix then. I've used alkanet root before in a small amount and it was fine. I did infuse it in oil first, then strained it before use.
