What are the best molds for re-batching--I mean, those that would turn out the best quality after the re-batched soap hardens? I usually re-batch small amounts, like 1 lb., because I don't want too much soap of a single scent.

The quality depends on what ingredients you put into your soap. Rebatch gets pretty gloppy. I would try a wooden (lined) log mold.

I've use single bar molds for rebatching and never had a problem, including some of the plastic ones from the craft store. Since the rebatched soap isn't very hot, those work fine. Once the soap has cooled I put them in the freezer for about an hour and the soap comes out easily. Any mold with a small design usually won't work for rebatching unless you can get a very smooth pour.

Ok, I will try single bar molds. Thanks for the suggestion. I bet my small plastic containers would work too--I have some rectangular ones with a rounded bottom from IKEA. I have been shoving the melted soap in 4-bar (5 oz each) silicone mold. It hardens up by the time I get it all in, so I microwave for 30 seconds and then press, press with my hands until the harder parts are in the middle--to avoid crumbly edges. I still have to cut all four sides for it to look smooth. Today I figured out that if I cut up all the scraps from the trim right away and microwave for 30 seconds, I can made a soap ball or two--I suppose I could use the soap ball in the shower and give away or sell the bars.
