Teach Soap

So I bought a HUGE jug of olive oil from Cash and Carry. I have used it in about 5 recipes that came out so-so to garbage material. Today my husband happened to pick it up and read the fine print. It said 30% olive oil 70% canola!!! Just how bad do you think that would mess up my recipes?

Also, (using the same "olive oil") I had my wax paper stick to the soap and the mold (wood) and soap/fragrance set into the mold. It's oily looking. Could I have poured to hot? I poured at about 118 but it was at thick trace. Has anyone used parchment paper?

freezer paper, plastic side toward the soap--I have never had a problem unmolding.

That will mess up your recipe. Canola is a very soft oil. I would reformulate your recipe as canola can give you DOS at higher amounts.

Yes, I learned very quickly that wax paper is not good enough on my first rebatch. I was using an 8x8 glass pan, and lined it with wax paper. Once the soap had hardened, I had to spend a long time getting all the wax paper off, and even now I have to pick a small strip or too out of each bar when I go to use it. Freezer paper is the way to go.

I'm off to get freezer paper. And as frustrating as it is to know I wasn't using pure olive oil, it is a relief to know what the problem has been. Thanks all!

In a pinch, parchment paper works, too.

So sorry you had this issue, but as you said, at least you now know. As SB said though, you will need to recalculate your formula before you do another batch, so that you will know what to expect. With that done though, I am sure you can use up your cruddy oil with a little time and a lot of other oils, then next time I am sure you will get 100% oo. It could have happened to any of us, so thanks for sharing and reminding us to read the little words!
