Does anyone have a good recommendation for a soapmaking book that gets into the science of soap-making a little more? What I mean is that I'd like all the possible problems with soap batches to be explained in more scientific terms than terms like "the soap just caught a chill," or something like that. The three my library offers were written by people who make soap and have experiential knowledge of it but don't have a strong grasp of the chemical reaction its variables.

Thanks.

I would imagine the Soapmaker's Companion book would go into the science. Of the book I have and the books that I know of she does go into the chemistry.

oh and i typed in soap chemisty and quite a few books popped up on amazon.

I own "Scientific Soapmaking: The Chemistry of the Cold Process" By Kevin M. Dunn. You can get it on Amazon. It's pretty good if you want to learn about the chemistry of saponification. But he doesn't get into too much troubleshooting. Also, the beginning is a little boring if you have ever taken a science class and are comfortable using lab equipment (he spends a looooong time discussing different weighing techniques.)

Hope that helps!
