Just wondering....I will start soon to make my first CO soap. My son ( 6) will be in school all day, so no worry there, the dog will be outside,
are you making soap even when having a younger child???
:P

I have a one year old and I still make soap. I either wait till he is napping, till my husband comes home and can watch him, or I pre-prepare everything and then stick him in his play pen when I start to work with the lye. I only do one batch at a time so that works for me.

My baby is now 24, but back in the day, I did make soap when the boys were home, I just planned for it, much as soapbabysoap does. Once the youngest was old enough to climb out of the paypen, I put the gate across the kitchen and made sure he was on the other side. Only once did I have to abandon a soap pot due to an emergency, but loosing that one batch of lye was not a high price for taking care of a boo boo. As long as you don't mind loosing a batch if need be, with some precautions and planning you can make soap when the little ones are home. :P

the older kids are 17 and 16 they are no problem....I'm just a little nervous ,just when I started making candles 3 years ago, now it's no big deal anymore, but less dangerous than lye for sure....

No -- we have 3 under 5 and send them to their playroom while we mix the lye, which then cools outside. They get sent back to the playroom when we bring the lye inside to add to the oils. This is mostly feasible due to the layout of the house, though -- the playroom is downstairs from the work area but the floor plan is pretty open so we can hear everything that is going on.

Nope! I got up early and made my batches before breakfast, and when they were older I'd wait until they had gone to school or out, but never slowed my soaping :)

My son is now seven, I also have a dog and cat who are always interested in what I'm doing. Before I get the lye out I put up a baby gate (the cat is too fat to jump over it!) and make sure my son has been fed and is occupied with a movie or video game. I've also scared my son silly about the dangers of lye since he was just a toddler! He knows that when the baby gate is up he needs to stay out of the room. I would say if you have very young children it would be best to have everything except the lye mixture ready to go and wait until they are asleep or with another adult. Be careful if you have pets too, they like the smell and taste of the oils.

My son is 3 and never naps and goes to bed at 9. Joy... So I have to wait for my husband to get home and watch him and make sure he stays out of the kitchen.

I have a Friday Night soap date. My friend comes over after my baby's asleep and we make soap and other things together. I keep my lye and essential oils on the top shelf of a cabinet in my craft room that she can't get to. It's just one more thing to child proof, I guess. Seems like I did so much baby proofing in these first two years, what's one more thing?

that sounds like fun, having friends coming over to soap.I'm sooooo tired at night, no desire to do anything since I'm in my 40's....
I used to stay up and do all kinds of fun stuff, painting, paper mache, and what not...
