Teach Soap

Hello everyone,
I was ecstatic today when I found I could get pomace olive oil for $.10/oz, coconut oil for $.08/oz and lye for $.13/oz at the Amish grocery here where I am visiting friends (way out of state from home)--I had been paying double that. This got me thinking about cheaper ways to get other ingredients, like castor oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter (now I pay $.42/oz for castor and $.80/oz for the butters). I haven't even considered palm oil due to the cost of the shipping. Does anyone have a favorite supplier?

Also, has anyone found a (relatively) economical online supplier for essential oils?

I prefer to buy quality essential oils. I know I can trust BrambleBerry for that. As far as oils or butters, it depends in which quantity. I buy mine in 50 lb. boxes and buckets from Soapers' Choice.

Goldenbarrel.com has palm oil for about $40 for a 5 gallon bucket. Even with shipping, it's less expensive per ounce than anything else I've found. They also have a good price for pomace, but the shipping to my area doesn't save me anything over buying locally.
BTW - what state are you in?

For base oils and a few butters, Columbus Foods has great prices and their shipping is bottom drawer!

As a small soaper just for family and very close friends, I like to consolidate an order for oils and fragrances... columbus foods does not offer other needed supplies. So unless I can get it locally I will stick with BB. That said, what part of the country did you find the amish store in? As I mentioned I am all for "buy it local" if I can.

The Amish store is in northern Missouri. There are lots of Mennonite bulk foods buisnesses around here and in southern Iowa. I am astounded at how cheaply I get things from them. Of course, I am not really buying locally as I will be driving the tons of olive and coconut oil I found here back home (Texas), but I am not paying shipping as we are already going to be driving home (we rarely fly anymore).

Thanks for the suggestions on possible suppliers.

Goldenbarrel.com . . . I buy their brand of molasses from this same Amish store where I found the amazing prices on pomace and coconut oil. Great molasses and the price is so much cheaper than anything I pay at the grocery where I live.

Has anyone done business with ? They're within driving distance of where I could go pick up a couple of times a year, and just wondering if anyone had any pros and cons with them. Their oil prices seem comparable with Golden Barrel.
