Teach Soap

Going to start my first batch this week. I have been doing tons of reading here and on other sites. Ordered a bunch of stuff to get started. I got a 3lb mold that I will be using till I figure out what I like.

Here is my question. Does this recipe seem good? I have read about the oils and the qualities of each and would like to include them in my soap.

12oz Olive Oil
10oz Palm Oil
10oz Coconut Oil
8oz Cocoa Butter
4oz Avocado Oil
4oz Sweet Almond Oil

6.65oz Lye for 5% superfat
15.84oz Distilled Water

What kind of bar can I expect? Lather, Hardness, etc. Will this recipe even work?

Welcome and congratulations, that first batch is oh, so exciting!! If you want to check your recipe for the qualities you have asked about, put your recipe into this calculator and it will assign numbers that will tell you. http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcWP.asp You should always use a lye calculator on your recipe anyway, just to make sure as even printed ones can be misprinted or wrong. BB has an easier one, but the one I gave you will offer you the qualities. For the easier to read, make sure that you click onto the second page.

Try a 7% superfat next time and see if you like it better.

Just made it with the 7% superfat. I am a little worried. Trace happened in about 1 minute. I added EO and it became more like thick trace. Poured ok. I think the coloring I used was bunk. Guess we will see in a couple days. How long till I should notice gel? Also I put a couple hand towels and a beach towel on it. Is that enough?

Recipe was as follows

12 oz Palm Oil
12 oz Coconut Oil
8oz Cocoa butter
8oz Castor Oil
4 oz sweet almond oil
4 oz avocado oil

6.6oz lye
15.8 oz water

2oz total of Lavender EO

Temps of both were just under 115 and it was mixed with a stick blender

Here is a photo from a few minutes ago. Looks like its gelling to me. Rising just a bit.

This is from this morning. There is a small crack about 4in long right in the center. Does not look very deep. Smells pretty good too. Still a little warm. Nothing compared to when it was gelling.

That crack is from the soap overheating. Next time, don't insulate quite so much.
