Teach Soap

I have a batch of soap gelling in a 1lb wooden loaf mold right now. I don't have a soap cutter yet, and I want to do a better job cutting this loaf than I have done cutting past ones. Are there any tricks to cutting a loaf of soap into even slices when you don't have a cutter? I always end up with big, fat slices and little, skinny slices, and everything in between

Do you have a miter box and a spackle knife? If not, I would get these at your local hardware store or one of the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes.

I don't have a spackle knife and I don't even know what a miter box is. I'll google it.

My miter box came from Harbor Freight and Tool and was only $5

$5? Wow. I'll have to check that out. My laser thermometer is my favorite piece of equipment. I love it!

Here is a link with a picture of a simple wire soap cutter. It looks like it would be easy to make. I use a wire soap cutter similar to this and my bars come out evenly cut.

Harbor Freight has almost everything! Love that store. If you don't have a miter box, you can use a small shoebox that will fit your loaf with one narrow end cut off. You just need to be able to have 2 sides to rest your knife against so that your cut will be straight. A spackle knife works great because it is wide enough to fit across the entire surface. Make score marks on the top of your soap loaf the width you want your slices and then line the mark up with the edge of the box & cut. Having said that, a miter box is still the best way to cut a loaf of soap! I "borrowed" the my husband's from our tool area.
