So... I bought 25kg of lye a few months ago and I'm reading now that lye gets 'old' does it have a shelf life and reduced efficiency over time? Basically I haven't been using it as fast as I'd like so will I need to buy as and when?

Properly stored lye in an airtight container away from moisture should last you about a couple of years. Once it starts getting clumpy, that means some moisture got to it and that will mess up your lye calculations.
