Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a way to lower PH in cp soaps.
my soaps ph are about 9, I know it's fine and normal for cp
soaps but still... it's much better to have more gentle soap
I'm trying to lower it to 7.


I just read about adding citric acid lowers PH in cp soaps,
any comments if it's true and if so how to add it to the soap?

Handmade soaps are right at the 9 pH mark. If you try to lower it, you will end up with the soap separating into caustic liquid and a pool of oils.

oh, I hadn't realize it. I always thought the lower the ph the better. I had no idea in that case it's not soap anymore

Do you like to use your soap on your face? If you wanted a lower pH for that reason I would recommend washing your face with your lovely soap as normal but make sure you use a toner after as the toner will help to balance your skins pH and bring it back down to it's natural acidic level. Of course don't forget a nice moisturizer and your sunscreen.

Healthy skin will return to its natural pH after 10 minutes or so. If she wants soap with a lower pH, I would go for a syndet bar. You can find many helpful hints and recipes here.> http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/

Yes, the skin will reset itself usually closer to the 20 minute mark. But it is best and recommended to keep it in balance so it's not working so hard to balance itself, sometimes it will produce too much oil in the process defeating the purpose of washing and refreshing your face in the first place.

I wash my face with my natural soaps and so does all my clients, etc., and have never heard anyone say homemade soaps cannot be used on our faces

Just want to say that before using my soaps to wash my face I avoided all soap on my face as it was very drying. Then I read somewhere on the forum that the glycerin formed during the saponification process was good for all of our skin. So I tried it and after about the first bar I started to notice I did not need a moisturizer and my face was softer... WOW! It has been about 5 months now and it may be that once we get into the cold temps of winter I will need moisturizer but for now just using CP soap has been great for all of my skin.

I think it depends on the person, skin type and their preferences. I have sensitive skin so I prefer to use a gentle cleansing milk. But regardless after cleansing in general the skin needs to be toned then have a good moisturizer and SPF to protect it.

I wash my face with my own soap, then moisturize. I don't use a toner. I do use a moisturizer and a sunscreen.

Yes, I agree sunscreen if one is going outside. Sad to say now that summer is over when I work its dark when I start and dusk when I leave and no windows where I work. Its a good think I like what I do!
