Okay, I was wondering about something, and figured I should ask on here. I make goat milk soap, and have found most of my batches turn out a little crumbley when I cut them, and look like there is little cracks in it. Its fine other then that, just trying to figure out why it gets kinda crumbley. Do I let it get to hot? I have read not to cover goat milk soap with towels and such because it can get to hot? The first couple batches I made were in containers that were wider, so the soap was thinner, and I did not have the crumbley problem at all, but only the first few batches, and a batch now and then. Never happens with my beer soap. Any pointers would be wonderful! Thanks

Goat's milk has natural sugars which will heat up your batch. Depending on the size of the batch that you make, I would put saran wrap or wax paper over the top and don't insulate. If your soap has cracks in it, it overheated.

Thanks for the reply, I do put saranwrap over the top, so I don't get ash. I will try with the next batch to put in completely not covered. I have heard some people put their soap in the freezer do it does not get to hot, does that help, and does it change the curing time?

The freezer helps keep the soap cooler, so there is less chance of overheating. Even if the soap ends up not gelling, it will still be soap in the end. Make sure that you let your soap come to room temp before cutting. Ungelled soap can take up to 3 days to completely saponify, so make sure that you are wearing gloves when cutting. Either way 4-6 weeks is still the normal cure time.
