Ok, I'll admit, I didn't think lard was an acceptable ingredient in soap. My girls made some suet for the birds and I had an extra pound of it in the pantry so I figured what the heck, I'll mix it with some sunflower oil and see what we get. I've been using it and I love it sooooo much, I'm going to go buy more lard! I love it even better than my olive oil and goat milk bars, which is saying something. Not to mention it's probably one of my prettiest bars yet...green and lavender swirl scented with papaya basil lime. I've been giving samples to friends and not telling them what's in it until after they use it:-).

Lard has been used in soap for years and years. I bet yours is some nice soap!

I also like lard. I keep thinking I should try tallow but it is not as availble here (and I am too busy to try to render my own). I have not tried it with sunflower oil, maybe my next batch. I have used it with olive oil and mango butter. Experimentation sure is fun!

I'll bet your soap is great. My Grandmother used lard too. I use tallow.

Linda, i think I recall reading a post from you on rendering tallow... how long does it take you? And one other question - someone posted that they could smell the tallow in the soap... can you? Thanks for the info!

That all depends on how much Im rendering. I usually do a big picnic cooler full and it is done over 2 days.
No I cant smell tallow.

Thanks Linda,
I have to ration out my time so for now I think I will stay with lard, just because I can buy it local. I am sure someday I will try to render some myself when the demands of the job are a little less! I am glad to hear it does not give a particular smell to your soap.

Don't get me wrong, you can smell it when your rendering it ( smells like beef cooking) But in the final product I can't smell the tallow. I get mine in exchange for a few bars of soap.
