Teach Soap

I am very, very new. I have made 4 batches and each one seems to have an issue. Do most regular soapers have a basic recipe they work with? Kind of a tried ans true recipe they like. There are just too many confusing recipes out there. I would like to find something that doesn't use a lot of exotic expensive oils. Also, it would be nice to have a soap that wasn't brown from, I assume, a high percent of olive oil.

Brown can be caused by fo's containing vanilla....different shades of brown depends on the content of vanilla.....Did you search recipes....you might find one you like on here.... ...also I use light colored OO for lighter soaps.....I am sure more experienced soapers can help ... HTH

If you post the recipes that you have tried, we can help you trouble shoot it. Olive oil should not cause your soap to go brown.

Don't get discouraged! I have been working on "my" recipe since last October. Someday I will take a soap off the drying rack and claim "this is it". And then I bet I experiment more The trial and error is part of the learning curve.

Of course I'm a newbie too.. I've only got 633 bars under my belt... but no two batches are the same, I keep tweaking the recipes.

The fail safe recipe I started with and still use today is Anne Watson's, from her book, "Smart Soapmaking". Her "Anne's Shea Butter Supreme" recipe on page 35: 10.5 oz coconut oil, 10.5 oz olive oil, 9 oz shea butter, 8 oz distilled waater, and 4.2 oz lye. Scent & colorant optional. I love this book which is great for the beginner.
