Teach Soap

Hi, all,

I am interested in using natural colorants to color my soaps, so my husband and I purchased some natural colorants. Some I'm familiar with, like clays and annato. But others are completely new to me. We purchased some woad powder, which is supposed to give a light blue color, depending on how much is used. I used a little yesterday in a shaving soap at trace (1/8 tsp in a 1 lb batch), but found it barely gave any color, though it might work well as a light swirling color. Any tips? The suggested rate of usage was 1/2 tsp for 5 lbs, so I tried using 1/16 tsp, but it barely registered. (In the end, I decided to add some bentonite clay and lime essential oil, which gave a green soap. Fine.)

I bought some as pieces and used a grinder. I didn't get any color from mine, but it wasn't a powder. Where did you get yours?

I've also purchased other colorants from this site, but I've yet to use them. I purchased my bentonite, pink kaolin, and french green clays from another supplier.

Hello, I am new to this forum. I am pretty interested into experiences with woad. I grew woad and made experiences (with cotton pieces, not soap !) with this tinctorial plant. It is like indigo : it contains indican, a substance that becomes blue when reacting with oxygen. So I wonder if it could give a blue colour to the soap... I would not think so. If it got green, this is at least something...

Please, if you succeed to tint your soap in blue with woad powder, I would like to know...
