I reused a plastic bottle that I got lye in from the Lye Guy to store some lye I bought in bulk. I also used glass mason jars. 1 of the plastic jars cracked and the lye drew moisture and turned into a rock. How do I dispose of it safely????

I would put it in your bathtub and rub water over it til it dissolves. Make sure you rinse the tub very well after you're done.

Oops! I meant to say "run" not "rub"; sorry.

I store mine in 1 quart freezer ziplock bags. I then put 4 or 5 of those into a 1 gallon plastic bag and seal that. I have had great luck with it staying fresh for a very long time.

I agree with soapbuddy on your lye block. If you lived next door I would take half of it cuz my tub needs it.

let me see if I understand. I should use this as drain cleaner? Won't it hurt my tub? What about the lye gas? This is a 2 lb block, Isn't that alot to put down a drain at once?? :?

Most drain cleaners are nothing but sodium hydroxide and water or an anti-caking agent. If your tub can handle Drano, you'll be fine disposing of your lye in it. You can turn on the fan if you have one, open the windows, and shut the door after you rinse the tub until the fumes dissipate.

Most drain cleaners are meant to go down the drain, not in the tub. I know in the beginning of my soap making I did not cover my work space and some of the lye crystals got on the counter top... when I wiped this off there were some dull spots left behind.

I found this on the net... maybe you should call your city waste management for recommendations even though this would be a small amount compared to what manufacturing does.... ???

[In the event of a spillage, Sodium Hydroxide safety would include absorbing the liquid spillage with sand, earth or other inert absorbant, while solids can be collected directly if it is safe to do so, with a scoop or shovel, otherwise, they should be mixed with inert materials and transferred to collecting containers. Always wear protective equipment as described above when dealing with spills.

Never discharge Sodium Hydroxide to the environment as it will contaminate the environment and can damage water systems by changing the pH of water. Always dispose of Sodium Hydroxide according to local regulations.]

thank you all for your advive. I also got a call from The Lye Guy who said I could mix it with water and use it as weed killer.
