Hi all,

I haven't soaped for a year due to pregnancy. I have several gallons of oil that has been stored in my garage while I was unable to soap. It all still looks and smells normal, but I'm wondering if it is still good and okay to use for the soaps that I sell. Any thoughts?

So the oils are at least 1 year old or are they older? Which oils are they? What is the normal temp of your garage? Does it get hot?

Thanks for asking, Soapbuddy. As an average, I would guess my oils to be around 18-24 months old. The garage gets hot in summer, but the oils were not put out there until September and it hasn't been terribly hot here in Virginia yet. I have some coconut, palm, and palm kernel flakes. Is there a way to determine freshness? Or is just a matter of knowing when youu got it, etc?

The coconut and the palm kernel flakes are most likely fine. I'm not sure about the palm since I don't use it. Here is a chart that gives you an idea on shelf life of oils

Apricot Kernel 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Avocado approx 1 year, keep in cool place
Castor approx 1 year, keep in cool place
Cocoa Butter 1 year +, keep in cool place
Coconut 1 year +, keep in cool place
Corn 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Emu 1 year room temp, 3+ frozen
Evening Primrose 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Flaxseed Oil 3 to 6 months refrigerated
Grape seed 3 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Hempseed 3 months refrigerated, 9months frozen
Jojoba Indefinite. Jojoba is not an oil, but a liquid wax.
Mango Butter 1 year, longer if refrigerated
Neem approx 1 year, keep in cool place
Olive 2 years, keep in cool place
Palm approx 1 year, keep in cool place
Peanut 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Safflower approx 1 year, keep in cool place
Sesame 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Shea Butter 1 year, longer if refrigerated
Soybean 3 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Sunflower 3 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Sweet Almond 6 months to 1 year, keep in cool place
Walnut approx 3 months, keep in cool place
Wheatgerm Oil approx 6 months, keep in cool place
