Hello,

Does anyone know how to make a black line in soap? If you don't know what I am talking about, it's a visual thing. I have seen so many soaps with a layers seperated by a thin black line. Any ideas?

Try a very thin line with charcoal or black mica. It has to be extremely thin, or the rest of the soap won't adhere.

I have a small seive that I use to sprinkle either mica or cocoa powder. Works great. I've also heard of putting some in a jar or tin and using a rubber band to adhere a stretch of pantyhose over the top. I haven't tried that yet.

I normally do the thin line like Soapbuddy said BUT I heard of a new technique I might try.

Another soaper actually makes a batch and splits between 2 log molds. Then she planes the top perfectly after about 24 hours. Then she makes another batch to split between the two loaves but takes out about 6 oz. She colors that and actually paints on the colored soap with a paintbrush. Then she follows up with the rest of the batch. PERFECT!!! Obviously this is a pain because it is a 2 step process but if you are already making two loaves of the same stuff, it works pretty easily. And you are pretty well guaranteed not to have separation or powder trails on the sides of your soap with this method.

When she takes out of the mold to plane, she barely peels the liner away from the loaf so she can get it nicely back into the mold.

What is great about this is that she can do all sorts of creative things like painting stripes and such so that the view when cut has a thin line made up of different colors.

Thanks to those who replied! I'm still a newbie & that process sounds a little complicated for me at this point. Maybe I'll try swirling instead :)
