I recently ordered palm kernel oil from columbus foods and am wondering if I need to smelt the whole container and stir just like palm oil needs to be homogenized. It's not palm kernel flakes, but actually oil solidified in a gallon container.

I use their palm kernel as is. I haven't had any problems.

I did not know that Palm oil needed to be homogenized? Are you saying one has to melt the whole container before using Palm oil? I just use mine straight out of the container.

I am conducting some tests on stirring and not stirring palm oil. I will let everyone know when I am done. It will be about 2 months yet for results.

I read about how palm kernel oil has the very similar property as palm oil that's why I was concerned about being homogenized or not. I've always bought homogenized palm oil in big quantity so I don't have to melt and mix every time I'm making soap, it can be pain to do after awhile.

Yesterday I thought about this and just for precaution I melted the whole gallon of my newly bought palm kernel oil from Columbus Foods and shook the whole container then poured into 3 smaller containers. At least now I can just melt small portion each time and not have to worry about it.

I would love to find out if there's really a difference about homogenized palm oil or not. Will wait for your conclusion, bigmoose!

For years I never stirred my palm oil, and I never had a problem with hardness. Then I switched to the homogenized palm, so it wasn't an issue. Now I use the sustainable palm, and because it's usually slushy when it gets here (I always seem to buy it when it's hot out!) I do mix it up and divide it up when it gets here. But that really has more to do with not being able to lift those 50 lb buckets anymore. :D

A lot depends on how the entire formula works together, not just each oil. So it's probably better to mix it up just to be safe.

It is a fact that unhomogenized stearic acid separates. It is a fact that when this happens, eventually there will be an issue, as in soap on a stick. You may not have an issue for several batches, but eventually you will, as you will eventually get to a portion of the palm oil that has either no stearic, little stearic, or too much stearic, and you will have an issue.
A test may not show you anything this time, as you may have the soap fairies on your side, but eventually luck will run out and you will have an issue. Then, when you do, you will have wasted a nice batch of oils as well as your time.
So the question becomes a matter of personal work ethic and standards. Do you do what you can to ensure a great batch of soap each and every time you work, or do you throw the dice and see if you get lucky just to save a few minutes of aggravation?

This is not a new thing, not something we dont already know about. Not something that hasnt been proven, not something that needs testing to be proven. I am not trying to be rude here, but it feels like several of you dont believe what you've been told. We are not alone in our statements, every experienced soaper will tell you the same. Stearic separates, you need to mix (unhomogenized) palm each and every time you use it (unless you separate it into single batches after blending well). Still dont believe? Watch a Soap Queen video, and let Ann Marie tell you the same thing or read through the old threads here. Better yet, study and research your oils.

Maybe I got up on the wrong side of the bed today, but this thread just struck me wrong. I apologize if what I have written strikes you wrong when reading it. It assure you, it is not my intention to offend anyone. I really just want everyone to know that this is not a made up thing, not something we are not sure of, and it really is a potential problem for anyone who doesnt know about it, or doesnt believe it.
