Just wanted to share a couple of photos of two batches I did this weekend where the fragrance oil clumped. I used a recipe I use all the time, but was trying to do some funky things before CPOPing (and then immediately putting in fridge) and I got separation as I didn't stir quite as well as I normally would (trying to keep at a lite lite trace with a recipe that traces very quickly).

I'm curious... does this mean that the soap is unable to be used (not sold, just used)? I have never had this happen, only because I have not done enough batches yet, but someday probably will. It does not look like "bad" soap. The top one I would stamp with an asian figure or turn it around put a sun stamp on it and it could be a sunrise.

Does it zap?

No, it doesn't zap. It cooked over an hour so it is okay. Just ugly and seeping a bit of fragrance oil. Should melt back in but not all the way.

I was out of soap for my kitchen anyways so now I have a bunch!

I probably should have mentioned that these batches were part of the room temp lye + 125 degree oil experiment I tried AFTER I had the lilac disaster at 89 degrees for oil and lye.

These bars really are fine as I have washed and bit and my hands have a few little cuts (cleaned out the garage this weeken!) and no sting this way and no zap with zap test.

i can't do lilac either, my formula just traces too fast - so i recently *finally* set down and designed a recipe that takes a lot longer to trace. i use it for cranky fo's (although lilac is still on my HATE YOU list). i think i'd tweak the formula and go back to the lower temps you're used to.

i'm going to send you about a million pm's asking detailed nosy questions. lol.

Thanks Magic! I love it that you are keeping the California time zone going!!!

Lisa

p.s. I did have a perfectly wonderful successful Lilac yesterday when I went back to my very first ever recipe and the sucker is perfect. CP, no insulation, no cover, no fuss. Go figure. Can't wait till this FO is gone!!!!!

after reading your pm, i think an old gypsy woman put a curse on your stickblender. there's no other possible explanation.

So, back to not mixing the FO in properly, yes?

I really did mix the FO in with my stickblender but can see how I might miss the edges. . . . I hate trying to beat a thick trace!

After having time to cut the various bars today, I don't think it was that the FO or the oils weren't mixed in and let me show you why... .

The green soap I posted earlier was part of a pretty big batch used to make 3 soaps--the green soap with embed, the pink soap with embed, and the leftover went to a simple layer.

The green soap and pink soap (as well as the funnel) are all leaking a bit of oil at the bottom 1/3 of the soap and around the embeds (mostly just at the ends of each loaf as the middles are perfectly fine) and were all made with my new 1" thick molds that are 18" long, all CPOPd. The pink and yellow layer, made from the exact same stuff, was also CPOPd but in a smaller loaf and it is perfectly dry.

So, if the smaller loaf which wasn't stirred more or anything is fine and even, it makes me think that the separation wasn't because of not stirring enough or a recipe mishap. .. .

Given this information and photos, any other thoughts? Could this simply be overheating?

One more photo. You can see the oil leaks around the embeds, at the bottom third of the blue soap. Soap 4.jpeg

Your soaps look great. Just curious, were the embeds the same oils and fragrance as the remaining soap? If not, could they have created a barrier to the FO or some of your superfatting? That doesn't explain the bottom edges, though. Maybe it's resolved 24 hours out? Hope so, those soaps are really neat.

I used the same recipe for the embeds and for what went around it. I cp'd the embeds and then after making the second batch, I cpop'd all of the batches (with embeds or without).

Seriously am stumped here.
