Congrats to the Saints and a victory well deserved. Congrats also to the Colts for a nearly flawless season. Both are champions.

The NFL & I go back a long way and I want to make a gold & black batch of CP. I have a fleu di lis stamp and just want a dual layer black on the bottom and gold on the top to show the insignia. Yes, NOLA Saints soap. Not very original but like I said....the NFL & I go back a long way.

I can make a natural gold color out of honey and melon juice. My question is: How do I make black soap? I've made goat's milk scented with vanilla select, rich dark chocolate, Arabian spice, spiced mahogany, etc., from BB and they all turn the goat's milk soap a very dark brown. But it's not black. What can I use that won't come off on my washcloths or my skin?

I don't have a a fragrance in mind for them yet but am willing to try a fragrance that has serious darkening capabilities.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/theories.

Activated charcoal will give you black.

What about black oxide? I used yellow oxide for the gold in my Mardi gras soap, it actually looks more gold than yellow.

Ahhhaa. Charcoal. I remember using it in the past after hearing it was good for certain things. Is this the same activated charcoal that I see in the pharmacies?? Also, any thoughts on how much PPO I should use? I knew I could count on you guys for help!! Thanks.

I buy bags of activated charcoal now but in the beginning I bought capsules from the pharmacy (forget the manufacturer) and just popped the charcoal out of the capsules.

A couple of things that might help:

1. This stuff gets all over the place if you are not careful, so I popped a bunch in a baggie so I could reseal what I didn't use for the future.

2. You might want to just start with 1/2 tsp, then keep darkening until it is a dark grey/black color.

3. It still may/will lather gray if you use more than a tsp for a 2 lbs batch so I started just making as dark a gray as I could get as gray lather was better than really, really gray lather when I went pure black with 2 tsp.

4. I cpop'd it and cp'd it and it didn't make a difference in the lather color, in case you were wondering. But the CPOP soap (an acne soap I make with charcoal) does seem to "bleed" the black less.
