Hi again,

I picked up some sunflower oil at my local Whole Foods...pretty inexpensive. However, now I'm reading that it has a short shelf life of about 6 months. I was planning on using it at about 10 - 20%, does that mean the soap will go rancid in 6 months? I have some Vit. E capsules but do not have rosemary oleoresin extract. Should I nix sunflower or just make sure I use the soap quickly?

Oooops. I read this thread but replied to the other. Here's what the site said about sunflower oil. I've used info from this site as a general rule of thumb but don't know how accurate it is.

Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil is a less expensive alternative to olive oil. It contains Vitamin E, so it naturally resists going rancid (Vitamin E is a preservative). Despite that, don't store it longer than six months. It is a less saturated oil so you want to combine it with other, more saturated, oils -- try to avoid using more than about 15-20% sunflower oil. It can make your soaps take longer to trace and to harden. Use as a Base oil up to 20%

I don't remember lolapooch. I found it about 6 years ago when I was trying to figure out how to make soap because I didn't know anybody to ask for advice. I didn't know the forum existed then and I was just perusing the net and reading anything I could get my hands on. It's a 3 page word document with a bunch of info about oil characteristics. If you PM me your email, I'll send you the file. Like I said, it's a 3 page word document and not very big but I've gone back to look at it numerous times.

I haven't seen sunflower oil go rancid in 6 months before. If you use it in your soap, use ROE and Vitamin E and you should easily extend the shelf life of the soap to a minimum of a year (in my opinion).
