Hi all,

Made a soap a day ago using CPOP and alas, it tingled my tongue at about 22 hours after I made it. I want to shred it and use it with other soaps, but can I do it with lye heavy soap? I have no idea where I went wrong, but it may have to do with the fact that I forgot the heating oils on the stove and they boiled.

Yet, I wasted a nice Cherry Blossom scent and an awesome pink mica on this so would hate to throw out.

Questions:
Should I wait another couple of days and see if the zap is gone before bothering to shred?

When I shred it, how much of the bad batch can I put in a new batch without ruining the new soap too?

Can I use chunks instead of shreds?

Thanks in advance!

Lisa

Could you rebatch it and add a little bit of oil instead? If it's lye heavy now and you add those shreds to another soap, those shreds could still zap.

Hi Soapbuddy,

I have no idea how much oil to use to rebatch. . .I really don't think I went wrong on the measurements of the oils BUT I did sort of boil them. And those pesky lye granuales were an issue--normally they are light and airy but this can of lye is kind of heavy. And I was having issues getting to trace so I may have gone a bit early. . .I was thinking the shreds (if I used just a bit, like for color) would "reconsitute" with the other new soap but I see your point about still zapping.

I guess that is the hard part of rebatching. . . if you know where you went wrong, it is easy to rebatch it but if you have no clue. .. .I am worried about doing anything with it, even for laundry soap.

What should I do?

If it was a just a small batch, I would toss it then. The pink mica could stain your clothes if you try to use it for laundry.
Is you lye chunky? If it is, moisture has gotten to it, which would make your measurements off.

Yes, it was chunky, or at least there was one big chunk and the actual granules seemed to be sticking together. So, bad lye?

Actually, let me go down this path a little more. . .this was the first "weird" looking lye I have ever bought and got it from my regular supplier. The soap seemed more "spongy" than normal, less smooth and glossy, but I attributed that to the TD I used (I normally never use TD as I don't like the skin feel). So the soap seemed more like whipped soap than regular soap when I was molding. It was unusual, but again, I was worried about the boiled oils more than the appearance of the lye.

So would spongy soap also be a result of lye that has gone off?

Yes, bad lye. Big chunks of lye indicate that moisture got in it. Granules can stick together if they are exposed to static electricity. That spongy soap could be from the lye going off. I use TD in some of my soaps and they are never spongy.

Very helpful! Thanks soapbuddy!

Going to buy some new lye and check inside the liner before I purchase!

Thanks for that, Tamarajane  My biorhythms tell me I'm very low with the intelectual bit. It must be right, I've been really "foggy" this week.
