Does anyone know using ROE really prevents DOS?

I have not seen any tangible test results that would indicate that ROE helps prevent DOS. I don't use it and have not had a problem except with an all olive recipe.

It looks interesting. I would think that any soap exposed to such high temp for a prolonged period of time would do the same thing. I am of the notion that just as long as you use fresh, unadultared oils, stored properly without excessive heat you should be ok. I have my mother's soaps that she made decades ago and they are still fine. I did have one batch of castille that got DOS, but none of my other soaps ever did. I would think it also depends which recipe you use. A few olive oils on the market today seemed to be adultarated with other oils, like canola, which has a short shelf life.

I have had problems with soap recipes with substantial amount of olive oil or other hard to preserve 'soft' oils. They usually end up with DOS after cured or smell like spoiled oil even if I store them in dry cool places. I'm thinking if I want to sell soaps or even just giving them away to my friends and family I don't want any DOS or spoiled oil smell happening to them after the soap is out of my possession.

Do you know of anyway to soap natural preservation into CP soap?

Soapbuddy---- that is the coolest thing that you have your mother's soaps!!! Are you using any? That would be a tough call for me, to use them or not.....


Mella, DOS is dreaded orange spots---- something that can turn up in your soaps weeks after they've been made usually due to an oil which has gone bad. There are many theories about causes, but many soapers agree that fresh oils kept in cool places and used within a year are the best insurance against DOS. You can also do a search and see where some specific oils have been a culprit too.
