I've read people online using Sodium Lactate as a hardener for CP soap, anyone has any idea how?

Thanks.

I use it in every batch at about 0.7 oz. per lb. of soap. This is the liquid version. I add it to my lye water after it has cooled off.

You mean using it as part of the water count or as addition? Before mixing with the oils?

Hi there-

Do you know if sodium lactate causes DOS? I'm new to soapmaking have only been doing it for a year now. I usually use the same recipe - Coconut, Palm and Oil with 5% superfat and the only time I ran into DOS was when using sodium lactate. I don't believe it was rancid oil because I had made other batches at the same time with the same oil/recipe and didn't encounter DOS. DOS is the worst

In all my years of soapmaking, I have never had problems using SL and getting DOS. I did get DOS with a castille once. That one had no sodium lactate.

Which is better, stearic acid or sodium lactate, to harden CP soap?

Thanks Soapbuddy! Maybe I weighed incorrectly or possibly had a bad batch of sodium lactate. Come to think of it, I believe it was a batch with high olive content.

I made 100% olive once, no DOS, but it took forever to harden and I wasn't a fan of the lather and slimy feel. My mom loved it though. Each to their own I guess.

Pure castille will not lather well and will be slimey. That's the nature of real castille soap. If you discount your water castille should harden up pretty fast. The only time people had problems with their olive oil soaps being soft was when their olive oil was adultarated.

Thanks again SoapBuddy! I've just started discounting water. What a difference it makes. I wish I had started sooner, but being a newbie I was nervous.

I got a DOS castille soap once...it was full-water, took forever to harden (had a brain freeze that day on the water) and other soaps made with the same olive oil are/were fine. So, chalk that one up to the theory that DOS is in part a water problem.

Never had a DOS/Sodium Lactate problem.
