I have been making soap for a while now and I keep seeing people talking about salt bars. My question is why would you want to make a salt bar? Does it offer some advantage to the user such as being good for the skin or exfoliating or just because the bar lasts a long time. Most of what I make and sell is geared towards luxuious body bars and such. So am I missing the boat by not making a salt bar to offer my customers?

Welcome to the forum!

Salt bars are great! Surprisingly smooth, lightly exfoliating and a nice change of pace. Here's part of a batch I made using a small amount of annatto seed infused oil for color and Brambleberry's Fresh Mango fo. The trickiest part is cutting them at the right time so I used cavity molds to avoid the possibility of crumbled bars. I think they are a luxury soap so if that's what you offer you might want to consider salt bars for your customers.

Those are beautiful Kate... what a great color and Mango FO sounds like the perfect scent to match that color.

I only just started making salt bars and I love them... they are definitely a luxury item if you can find the right balance of salt and lather.

Thanks Mickey! I made it easy on myself by using the recipe that Magic_hands had posted on a salt bar thread last spring. I couldn't resist adding an ounce of castor oil when recalculating for mold size though. Gotta have my bubbles. :D I've been pleased with the lather. It's pretty rich.

It's the week before Christmas and I'm s-o-o-o into citrus salt bars. Mango, Yuzu, Blood orange and Bergamot. I made a batch with spearmint essential oil, too, but I want citrus. Go figure.

I love citrus too... do you do anything special to help it stick and keep it from fading?
I have a pink grapefruit I've been wanting to try. Maybe I'll use it in my scrubs.

I use a little litsea cubeba eo to anchor citrus. It smells lemony but has a low recommended usage rate so I don't use it as a lemon replacement. Ooooh, your pink grapefruit would be great in a scrub. :)
