Hi Everyone,

This might seem a little dumb but what type of wooden mold do you prefer? I have had my boyfriend build me log mold to start playing around with making soap. I realized quickly that I couldn't get the tops perfectly even which bothered me. But on this sight I see people complimenting other people on the wavy tops of their soaps all the time. So is wavy tops a good thing? And if yes why? Sorry got off subject. So I had my boyfriend build me a big flat mold. My plan was that i could pour it all in and it would lay flat and I wouldn't have to worry about the tops because that would be the side of the soap and it would be flat. Well that didn't work either. Now the sides are just wavy. Is there anyway to get the soap to level out?

Thanks!

Either way is fine. If you want level soap, I would suggest pouring at a thin trace.

and make sure the table your working on is level too. My dresser is the most level spot in my house so that is where my soap sits for the first day.

That's one thing I like about my PVC pipe molds... every bar is the same except for the piece I slice off the top.

That is interesting about the pvc mold, not to worry about level!~ I've thought about using this type of mold, but wasn't sure I would be able to push the finished product out. Do you have a method of getting the soap out easily?

I freeze my PVC mold full of soap to help get the soap out.

I line PVC molds with a flexible plastic chopping mat like you would use in the kitchen. I cut it down so that the edges meet inside the tube and it sticks out just a bit at the top.

The freezer method usually works fine too but the liners are pretty foolproof and are reusable... and I feel they make cleanup a bit easier.

I use a log mold that is a bit deeper then the bar size I want to make. After I cut my bars I trim the top off making for a nice smooth top and I have the trimmings to use a samples. The look of the samples isn't as important and they are very popular at the craft fairs.

Another thought on the log mold, not so much surface to decorate or that needs embelishment if you don't cut it straingt. Also the log mold split long ways then cross produces a nice small like half bar but long for small hands.
