Sorry if this has been asked before. Also, sorry for not popping in for so long - been really busy getting ready for the holiday craft shows. I hope that everyone is doing well!

Has anyone used liquid silk in a CP batch? I tried adding a tiny bit (less than .5%) at the very end of my batch. The soap was at a very light trace. When we added the liquid silk, it was just fine - no acceleration or reaction whatsoever. After stirring (with a wisk) for a while, we added the FO (a reliable floral that I've used before). Immediately, the mixture went almost white and started to accelerate like crazy.

We were able to stir the fragrance in with a whisk and made it to the mold in time, but I have never had that happen before. Since I've used this particular FO before with no problems, do you think it was the FO in combination with the liquid silk? The liquid silk was the only variable that was different.

Any thoughts?

I have a CP batch curing at the moment where I used liquid silk at trace. I used rose geranium EO and clay for colour and there are white patches throughout the bar. I made another batch the following day and added the liquid silk to the lye and this batch has come out fine.

I have read that silk fibres should be added to the lye and be allowed to dissolve but I’m now assuming liquid silk is best added at lye stage too but I would be interested to hear what others think.

Yes, I read when using silk fibers that it is best to add them at the lye stage. I just assumed, since this was liquid silk, that it would be OK to add at trace. Hmmmm, maybe not!! Right now, the soap is going through the gel phase. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when it is cut...

I would have added the liquid silk to your lye water after it has cooled off. For silk fibers, those need to be added to the lye water right away, so they can melt.

Good to hear from you Heavenly, I've missed your posts. Thanks for the inquiry on liquid silk. I have wondered how to incorporate this in my soaps too. I've had liquid silk sitting on the shelf here for awhile and will try it.

I've missed being on the Forum. If you try the liquid silk, let me know how it turns out.

I think my batch is going to be fine. I unmolded it this morning. I may have lucked out, but next time, I will add it at the lye stage.

I add liquid silk to the lye/water and haven't noticed it mis-behaving.

Maybe the extra stirring by adding the liquid silk at trace is what's changing your results?

I find liquid silk much more pricey than the raw silk that I add to my lye water.
