I've been using the Olive Pomace and don't really like it. I don't like the color or the smell! I finished it but need to buy some OO. I read that Grade A refined is good but I would like to try something I can buy locally. Can I use Extra Light Olive Oil. It looks like the same as grade A in color and smell?

Yes you can use Extra Olive Oil. Many ppl choose Pomace because it is more economic for soap making. Some ppl said Pomace contains more acids good for soap making but I read some ppl said no big change.

She's asking about extra light olive oil. It's lighter in taste and color than some other kinds of olive oils, extra virgin, refined Grade A and pure, natural among them. Diana, I'm not sure. I've used it for cooking but I haven't used it in soap. It's so light that I'm not sure if it's extra refined, mixed with other oils (without the label saying so)or what the deal is.

Extra light olive oil is fine. I no longer use pomace as it traces too fast for me.

Thanks. I'm going to give it a try. Kate, I use it for cooking too that's why I thought it might work. I knew I would get the answers here! :D

Kate, I don't care for Pomace either - in my cooking nor in my soap. I'm finicky about what I'll put in my mouth, and the same goes for what I put on my body. I do cphp and always use the extra light olive oil and IMO it soaps beautifully. It does tend to be a bit soft at first but hardens nicely after about a week and, as with any soap, the longer it cures the better it is. I know my customers have noticed a difference as well - I used pomace when I first started and while they purchased the soap many came back after purchasing the batche(s) made with extra light and asked if a) I had changed my recipe and b) if I would continue making the "new" soap. The (mine anyway) customer speaks. Hope this helps.

I've never used pomace. I use food grade pure, natural oo or evoo in soap. I'm glad to know the extra light oo works for you and that it will work for Diana. It's not cost effective for me beyond cooking and salads. My local supermarkets carry small bottles of it and I would use a lot for soap. Cha ching! (Sound of cash register adding up.) Super market oil gets real pricy for soap. Plus I already have one soft oil in a small % in my recipe and don't care to add another. And actually, what you said about your soap being softer initially makes me wonder even more if the extra light oo is mixed with something else. Thanks for your concern and wanting to help, though. :)

Diana (and anyone else) I don't know if you have a BJ's club near you but they're currently running a 60 day free membership special - no strings attached. IOWs you don't have to pay anything up front or join at the end of 60 days. A little over a gallon of pure, natural (Bertolli) OO is $24.99. I figure with what I'm saving on shipping from my normal supplier that works out better for me for now so I'm going to stock up. I didn't ask about the extra light OO when I called.

Costco may have better prices. I think Spotted Cat said she was paying $18.99 for a gallon of food grade pure, natural OO. I'm not a Costco member because there's not one near me. Just tossing out a few ideas that people who are on the olive oil hunt might want to check into.

Kate, I belong to BJ's and buy my OO there. Do you think the regular is better than extra light or are they the same.

Yep, I buy mine from costco, $18.99/no tax here in Oregon and it has worked just fine for me.

I buy the 5 litre regular Bertolli's from BJ's. It's the best price and soaps great for me. And I just got $4 off the last bottle with one of the coupons they mail out.

It does not say Extra Light but it does say "Mild Taste"... whatever that means.

I use the extra light olive oil in any soap Im gonna color with burgandy or lavender since I don't want to permote a yellow cast to the finished product. With me it's a color thing.

Oh thanks for the post Linda! Good to know that the extra light is less yellowing.
