I was wondering if you could just boil the herbs or spices in water to get the color - then strain the water thru a coffee filter to get the herbs & spices out of it. Would this work? Would the water take the color from the spices? If so, could you use this water with the lye or would the lye burn off the color? Thanks.

It depends which herbs or spices you use. Ones with chlorophyl like parsley will loose their color due to oxidation. Paprika works to give the soap an orangish hue.
