There are several good books. The Everything Soapmaking book by Alicia Grosso is a great book. Also The Sopmakers Companion is a good book as well.

SAP= the saponification value of that particular oil or butter. This is the amount of lye needed to make the oil/butter into a bar of soap.

A great place to mess around with recipes is thesage.com. Here you will find a lye calculator and be able to adjust your recipe each time. The lye calculator will do all the work of figuring out how much lye to use.

I would try any beginers recipe in small 1lb. batches till I found one I liked. You could use an empty 1 quart milk cartin for a mold. It will save you money on ingrediance, when your just getting started. I got lucky my first batch turned out real nice and I've just tweeked it alittle since. Then I had my husband make me a bigger mold out of scrap wood we had in the basement. I line it with parchment paper and it comes out every time. good luck Linda
