Where is the best deal for lye purchase? I have ordered from AAA & it was pretty reasonable. The Lye Guy has a deal on now, but I'm not sure about the shipping costs? Anyone have experience ordering from the Lye Guy?

I get my 50 lb. bags locally, so I'm not much help.

I have ordered from the Lye Guy and he is very nice to deal with and his shipping is reasonable.
You can begin to place the order online and see your shipping charges without actually placing the order. If you don't want to input your personal info until you make up your mind you can always enter bogus info just to find out the shipping costs.

For ordering in quantities less than those 50# bags he was the best deal I found per pound once I included shipping costs. That includes buying from the local Ace Hardware in those 1# bottles. I don't have any place else to buy locally.

I used a calculator to figure between Lye Guy and AAA, and AAA (including shipping) was cheaper by a few cents per pound. I think it was the shipping that did it, so depending on where you live, kwim?

I agree, a few cents is nothing & really what I wanted to hear was that the Lye guy was reliable and seems that he is and I'd certainly rather support the small business owner than big business any day. Thanks Mickey & Vinca!

Just thought I'd chime in for the Lye Guy as well. I've found him to be very quick, I get the Lye in just a few days and the shipping is reasonable since I'm not too far from him (but too far to drive).

Quick question:

I was talking about lye to someone I work with and the next day he brought me a container of Red Devil lye. I've heard not to use this brand anymore for soaping- can you guys give me a definitive answer? Nowhere on the label does it list ingredients.

Thanks soapbuddy! I thought so. It's impossible to find lye anywhere anymore and I figured since he had the red devil lye it might be older (therefore safer, because it might be the real deal) but I'm not going to take any chances. Damn jerk Red Devil people.
