Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forum for a while and decided to join. There's so much help and information here! :D

Anyway, my question is about a stainless steel pot that I ordered. It's 18/10 stainless and arrived today.
The interior has what is called a "satin finish." This was not noted by the seller when I purchased it. (online)

Is this suitable for making CP soap?

Also the interior has some flaws in the bottom - not dings ( it's new) but more like small discolorations. It was also made in China and looks cheaply made. I've considered sending it back, but given the shipping cost I've already paid and the shipping cost to return it and the difficulty I had even finding SS pot, I don't think I will if it's usable. Thoughts from you experienced CP soapers? Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kate

Sounds to me like your not happy with the pot you recieved. It would be a shame to keep it if you don't like it. Call or email the company you bought it from . Tell them your unhappy aand want to return it. They can send you a shipping lable ( prepaid ) That costs you nothing. . Alot of times they will tell you to keep a defective item cause it dosn't pay them to ship it back. And just refund your money.

It sounds like you could use it to me---- as long as it's stainless steel. My soap pots are stainless steel "stew" pots that you can find in Walmart. Just make sure your handles are secure if you are worried about it being cheaply made. Be sure and start small so you can see how all your equipment works and see if you like your recipe.......then the sky's ( and your wallet ) the limit!

I agree with Knine, Walmart is your friend for all things stainless steel and reasonably priced.

the satin finish is a texture of the stainless itself, not an added coat - so it should be fine.

That said, for years now, I've been soaping in plastic buckets. I probably still have some of the first oil buckets I ever emptied, turned into soap buckets. Those suckers never change or wear out - and they're much lighter than stainless steel! :D

Justkate: I don't know ow much you paid for your pot, but if you don't trust it, I'd recommend you use it for something else. Lye is dangerous enough for you to be working with it on equipment you're not sure about.
Also, what you could do is mix some lye water solution, and leave it in the pot for a day or 2, in a place where nobody will touch it, and where an accident could be contained. If the pot survives without damage, you're good to go.

Otherwise, if you have to get new pots, I bought these specifically for soapmaking...

...For about $24.99, IIRC. They're (obviously) cheaply made, but so far they have performed admirably.

Hope it helps. :)

Justkate: I feel I need to warn you about this: If you go to a Harbor Freight store, make sure you ONLY take the money to buy what you need. Also, make sure your husband does NOT go with you. Take it from me: I went there a few years ago, to buy a hammer (true story), and I ended buying more than $7000 worth of tools!
Seriously, the damn place is addictive... :P

I wouldn't use it for soap. If it has discolorations on the bottom, the finish is most likely so thin, that it wouldn't last very long. Sometimes you can find heavy duty stainless steel pots in your local thrift store or even a restaurant supply store. I wish you good luck!

I agree with Soapbuddy, I looked around my house for soap making items and came across an old stock pot and most of my other equipment.I've also picked up stuff at yard sales and thrift stores .
