What do you suppose a good dog shampoo would contain? I was thinking neem oil, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, and rosemary for insect repellent. Obviously coconut, palm and olive but what else. Does anyone have a good pet shampoo bar recipe?

Thanks!

I would use a bar that's either unscented or use liquid soap made specifically for dogs. The PH of their skin is different than humans. The PH of handmade shampoo bar could irritate their skin.

I have a cockapoo who has naturally dry skin. The groomer and I tried several commercial shampoos with no improvement. I currently use a bar soap that has olive oil, coconut oil, apricot kernal oil and crisco superfatted at 7% with 2 parts eucalytus, 1 part tea tree and 1 part citronella for scent. This soap has not only stopped her scrtaching but has the added benefit of repelling bugs.

In fact, I use the same soap myself if i am going to be outside gardening or backpacking. As you can see, she's not itching now.

Please keep in mind that dogs lick themselves, so they might be ingesting anything you put on them. Also, they have VERY sensitive noses, so what's a barely perceptible fresh scent to our noses might be a big cloud of stench to them.

That's a good point, my soaps tend to be very lightly scented anyway as I am very sensitive to fragrance. In fact, about the only way you can typically smell it is by actually sniffing the bar. I would never want a dog to be engulfed in scent, but the soap I use has a lot less lingering fragrance than the commercial shampoos we had been using. But, as always, your results may vary. Also, my vet did say that some dogs are sensitive to tea tree oil so you may want to do a spot test on your dog before you use it.

Thanks everyone. Did you notice how runny the liquid soap was in the dog shampoo video?!
