Teach Soap

Here is a question I have been getting in my inbox lately and below is the answer I gave! If anyone has anything I should add let me know!

"I did notice that you did not have vitamin E (one the lye calculator), although I would add after the saponfication I was wondering if it would change the calculation if I added it prior."

"Thanks for checking in! Saponification continues throughout the curing process of the soap and to wait until after saponification would be too late because the soap will have hardened by then. You can either add the Vitamin E at the same time as your other oils or after trace! Although it hasn't been proven scientifically, some people believe adding it after trace will leave some of the oil unsaponified to act as an extra moisturizer!"

Since Vitamin E oil helps with oil rancidity as well, you might suggest that when soapmakers get their liquid oils, the first thing they do is add 1-3% vitamin e to their oil to help improve the shelf life of their oil.

Then, when they use that oil for soapmaking, the Vitamin E will already be incorporated in!

I add it to my oils for its anti-oxidant properties and to help prevent DOS. Properly made soap should not need anything extra. Since so very little is used, it will not make much difference in moisturizing properties.
