I tried to do a search but the search engine said that salt was too common and word and it wouldn't do a search :(

Anyway, all of the recipes I have seen call for a high percentage of coconut oil. My base soap is usually 50% olive, 25% coconut, 25% palm. Will this work for a salt bar?

Any recipe will work for a salt bar. I would start off at 1/2 cup of salt to 1 lb. of soap.

^^^Other than being scrubby though...how does salt change a recipe? You know....SL has humectant qualities, so it improves a recipe. Does salt do things to your recipe to make it more _______________ (fill in the blank)>?

Salt bars will not lather much, due to all the salt. The bubbles are small if any.
As far as benefits, I'm not sure. I think it's more of a label appeal.

You could still use it to wash with. Even without bubbles, salt by itself is a great cleanser. You could also grate it, then mix with equal parts borax and laundry soda (not baking soda) and use for laundry.

Salt bars seem to get better over time. I would give them another couple months and try them again.

If you want to do something else with it, crumble it up and add it to another batch.

Actually, for salt soap, I'd switch to all coconut. I make and sell lots and lots of salt bars, and they lather like a mofo. I generally use salt equal to the oil amount.

I do find they have a distinctly different feel than regular soap, too. It's certainly more than label appeal.

I should have mentioned earlier - I do have some small sample pieces of salt bar here. If anyone wants one to try, drop me a pm and I'll put one in the mail for you. :)

I just wanted to report back that I tried magic_hands' salt soap and WOW! I'm in love! That bar exploded with bubbles and I did feel a difference. My skin felt softer afterwards. Not like 'moisturized soft' but more like 'rejuvenated soft' if that makes sense.

I definitely want to learn to make salt bars nows. I couldn't quite imagine what it was like so thank you magic_hands for the sample. What a sweet person you are to share that with me. Of course, I'm checking out your Etsy site now and will be placing an order shortly! ;-)
