I just heard and saw a video on youtube about tooth soap. Does anyone have more info on this? Is it really better than toothpaste?

I don't know anything about it, but it did creep me out to read on my tube of Colgate that one of the ingredients was Sodium Hydroxide!

Lye is a PH adjustor in a lot of things including toothpaste, pickles and pretzels.

I make tooth soap. I don't use coconut oil, so it has less of a soapy taste. I also use Xylitol and a touch of mint.

I've been using my tooth soap for at least a year now. I get great dental check ups.

Any soap recipe can be used to make tooth soap. Just sub the coconut for another oil.
DON'T use fragrance oil or color. Essential oil in a small amount is ok. Just make sure that
the EO is GRAS (generally recognized as safe).

This thread made me curious, so I did a bit of research. It seems that some people do use plain soap to brush their teeth, and others use a paste of baking soda, salt and some peppermint or cinnamon EO. One person recommended using a plain, castille soap, but I can't imagine that it tastes very good! I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has tried either of the aforementioned tooth soaps and what they think. Any suggestions for a recipe? I'm intrigued!

As someone who had their mouth washed out with soap more than once as a child (ivory) I've got to tell you I remember it as a bad thing. Now days it would be considered child abuse. Still Id love to hear more about tooth soap.
Is it molded into bars? Or would you pour it into little flat pots? I guess mint EO would be safe to flavor it?

I was just thinking about this...how much do you superfat a tooth soap recipe? Because it would be more to correct the margin of error, right? Couldn't you just do a castile?

How about using flavor oils for taste?

I superfat my tooth soap at 5%. Yes, flavor oils can be used.

I had to try it - So I went and got a unused baby soap that I make which has 60% OO- I wet my toothbrush and swished on the soap then brushed my teeth.
It cleaned very well and didn't taste "soapy" at all. A little flavor would help. Are flavor oils safe to use for CP? Would they still have flavor after saponification?
