I wonder why my soap is turning to jelly?

I know that as the soap gets smaller from use it becomes softer...but I have about two bars (of the same recipe) that are doing this. This bar has cured for about 10 weeks now.

Did you use softer oils, is there any humidity where the soap is, are you keeping the bar out of water or is it a mostly an olive blend or all olive soap?

The other bars in our bathroom are elevated from the water and are not in direct contact with water...and they are in a soap-type dish.

This particular bar had plenty of soft oils...70%soft 30% coconut... so yeah... i think i know why it looks like jelly -mess :)

Sounds like it's the soft oils then.

Ditto - and if there is any superfat about 2-3%, they're even more prone to jelly-ness during use.

Get yourself some soap racks( hope I spelled that right). Alot of soap dishes let water lay in them and so does your soap. That will turn any soap to jelly. I use them on my sink instead of soap dishes beacuse they drain water from the soap perfictly. There about the same size as a soap dish. You can get them in the dollar store . I include them in some of the gift baskets I sell. Id love to find some better ones out there.

thanks! I am still learning about the peculiarities of soap. This jelly phase was very new. Plus the recipe for that bar was too mushy.

Soap Rack it is!

And every time I see the word "rack" I always remember a scene from Bringing Down the House

A little boy is reading a Maxim and asks inquisitively to Queen Latifah's character: "What's a rack?"

The dad, played by Steve Martin, quickly delivers: "It's a country! Now give me that!"

Wouldn't a soap country be grand?

IKEA has these great little suction cuppy wire dishes... only 99 cents each.

I have 3 in my shower.

They also have some pretty wooden ones also 99 cents...

I bought a few of these to give as gifts but have not used them... though they should help with drainage.

EDIT:
 I just did a search on "soap rack" since I never heard it called that. I can't believe how many people are re-selling this 99 cent Ikea item as a "Solid wood soap rack" etc... for $3 bucks and up!

IKEA is about 1.5 hours away. I suppose I can make the extra drive when I head out to San Jose tomorrow.

I do like the suction cuppy dishes. I only have one in my shower and it's OVERRUN by all the soaps I've made. The one near the sink is very flat and is probably the reason why my lavender soap turned to jelly.

I think it's time for more suction cup action.

THANKS YA'LL!!! :P
