I recently made my first shampoo bars. I have used it myself now only for 2 days. I've been told by other soapers to give it about a week for my hair to get used to it. It seems kinda frizzy right now. I was thinking about making another batch with jojoba oil for conditioning. If I do this, is there a recommended percentage to try? I don't want to use too much or too little. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I make a few shampoo bars but have never used jojoba in mine yet. When you run your recipe thru soapcalc what kind of number did it give you for conditioning?

soapbuddy-
Thanks so much for the link. I've never seen that site before. Awesome!!

Bruce-
The number on conditioning is 62. Is this a good # to be at?

Is there a "transition" phase that a person has to go through when switching to a shampoo bar? I've been told to keep using it and it would take about a week or so for my hair to get used to it. How much truth is in this? Should a person use a separate conditioner? AAAGGHHH!! So many questions....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it bad if you shampoo your hair each time you shower?

What's worked for me and my sister is shampooing every other shower. I notice my hair (and scalp) feels a lot better if I don't use shampoo all the time. a quick rinse and I'm good to go!

then again. there is a relatively small mop on my head, so it's easy maintenance.

I've heard that too. I've gone back and forth with that theory. My hair gets pretty oily and so usually the 2nd day is a ponytail day. I think I might test that theory again with the shampoo bar and see if that helps

I have heard the shampoo every other day thing as well.... something about leaving more of your own natural conditioning oils in your hair. Not sure if it is true. I mentioned it to a hair dresser once and they looked at me like I was insane.... although they were also trying to sell me their shampoo...

I can't use shampoo bars unless they are syndets. Shampoo bars ten to roughen the hair's cuticle, making my hair frizzy, even though I have straight hair.

You guys should just shave your head like me. The ladies like the look and you save tons on shampoo. I use a 10% superfat recipe with a lot of shea butter and my scalp feels like a baby's butt. No comments from the peanut gallery on the resemblance!!!!

62 is a good number, I aim for 60 when I do mine. I have some customers who use shampoo bars everyday and swear by them. I use my shampoo bars or my liquid shampoo every day and think my hair is in great shape.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to keep at it and see if the frizziness improves. I've only ever heard wonderful things about shampoo bars. I'm trying to switch over to a homemade, non-commercial life. I've even gone to milking my own cow.

My hair HATES shampoo bars, no matter what. I wish I could use something other than syndets, but it just doesn't work for me. You might find the same thing is true for you, too.

I'm the same way- I tried a shampoo bar for a good week with terrible results. My hair was limp, clumpy and I hated the way it felt. It's straight as a pin, I always assumed soap bars were good for curly hair? At least I'm not the only one!

I just read an article on the internet saying "no pooing" is the newest hair care movement. It said that some people prefer to just use conditioner or to first rinse their hair with a water and baking soda paste. It's supposed to give your hair more volume and shine. Unfortunately you have to go through about 6 painful weeks while your scalp figures out how much oil to produce without shampoo. That's where the poo part comes in
