The other day I noticed that there was an amonia smell as I got closer to the center of my soap. I have done the "zap" test and it seemed fine but I'm concerned about the smell. It's not super strong but I can smell it as I use it and it gets closer to the middle. Is there a problem with this soap? Is it safe? Thanks!!

It depends; did you use a milk of some sort?
If you did use milk, that's where the ammonia smell comes from. It will dissipate as the soap cures.

Sometimes there is a wierd smell when first coming out of the molds that fades with curing. It's good it is not zapping--- how old is it and would you be willing to show the recipe? Also, milk soaps can have a burnt type smell if it heated up too much.....I'm sure others will have some thoughts.

Only once have I had an elderly woman go by my display at a show and say to me that she smells lye soap  Most everyone else loves the smells of my soaps at the shows. Some people just may be more sensitive to cetain types of smells.

Can you define the smell a little? My goat's milk soap will have a putrid smell as soon as it's unmolded. Afterward it smells like the FO.

Thank you for all the replies  I did use milk. It was an oatmeal, milk & honey soap. It's a different smell from the first unmolded smell. They had cured for about 5 weeks and the smell was coming out as the soap was being used. It was my dad that pointed it out to me. He said that as he got down to the last little bit of soap, he could smell the ammonia smell. I used some of the same soap and didn't notice it myself but it concered me. Do milk soaps take longer to cure than just water? I'm still pretty new at this. Thank you for all the help

How long did you let the soap cure?

For next time, dissolve your lye in minum water required. Soap cool and add the room temp milk after the oils and lye have just barely emulsified. Don't gel, or help prevent gel by putting the soap in the fridge or the freezer. That should help with the smell.

For honey, I would use no more than 1 tsp. per pound of oils.

What do you mean by the minimum amount of water?

I think a recent rebatch of mine has the same issue. Only I didn't use milk at all.
I shaved a soap that had too much fragrance and was improperly colored into a new batch of the same recipe.

Stuck it in the oven, saw it gel, had no issues unmolding and t-zapping.

This "ammonia" smells arrises when I lather up. The bar smells like soap but when the lather starts building up and I put my nose a little closer, I get a strong whiff of ammonia.

Is this soap a goner?

:(

It is possible.

The website to this fragrance did not say if it was "heat friendly." Only CP-compatible.

The shredded soap was essentially cooked twice.

I was hoping the scent would just stay the same....I guess I would've had to prevent gel for that to happen! *DOH*
