Teach Soap

I am keen to make goat milk soap, but everytime I do the milk separates & turns orange when I add the lye. It also seems to trace quickly & go very fatty. Is this normal? Any tips would be appreciated.

Are you freezing the goats milk prior to adding the lye to it? This will prevent you from burning your milk. I have had my frozen goat milk go a slight shade of orange when I add the lye but the soap actually comes out this nice and creamy color.

Hi joecate! All my soaps are fresh frozen goatmilk--- no water. I use the full amount of water recommended by the lye caluculator in goatmilk for each batch. As JessieV says, freeze your goatmilk in a flat freezer bag then pound it into small pieces. Weigh the pieces per your recipe and slowly sprinkle the lye on top while stirring constantly until all the pieces are melted and it looks the a pina colada ( well, it does to me but it may be wishful thinking or something......) I have never had "separation" using this method. I do keep my oils slightly warmer than room temp because the cold milk/lye solution will cool the whole thing down pretty low and you want it thoroughly mixed and not false trace. Good luck!

I use minimum water to disolve the lye. I then add the room temp milk to the pot as soon as the lye & oils are mixed.

Do you use a certain amount of the liquids needed for the recipe to dissolve the lye? Then add the rest of the liquids as milk?

I have never tried to freeze the goats milk. All of these tips made sense, so thankyou all. I will have another go!!

Hi:

I use a method similar to Soap Buddy. I mix the lye-water with the oils and then add the goat's milk (at same temp as the lye-water and oils). I have made quite a few batches using this method and they have are turned out nicely.
