Hey folks, can you tell me what is a good price per ounce to be paying for olive oil? And does anyone have a good supplier to recomend? I was getting it at a cerplus outlet but lately they haven't had the light oil, and then only in small bottles.

what does refined mean in terms of soapmaking?

Refined Olive oil is the oil consisting of a blend of refined olive oil and virgin olive oils. Pomace is the dregs or the last pressing of the olives. Olive oils are graded according to the extraction method. The highest quality oils will undergo a single pressing while those that are of lesser quality will become more “refined” through heat or chemical extraction.

For most, it does not make any difference in soapmaking. Some prefer organic or virgin for their soaps as it's a higher quality. Some people are happy with pomace.
I find pomace traces too fast for me, so I don't use it.

thanks for all that good information. I've been useing extra light or just light olive oil to not add color to the soap. It still comes out an ivory color.

Can you guys help me do the conversion from "gallons" to "pounds"? In that, how can I determine the pricing between them, and say...golden barrel?

I've read 7#/gallon, but is that accurate enough?

WSP lists the approximate conversions on most of their oils which I find handy for comparison shopping. Though I can't say how accurate their measurments are and I have not verified them myself.

Soapbuddy, Is soapers chioce where you buy your olive oil? I got my coconut oil there but was hoping to get a good price on olive oil localy to save on shipping. Thats why I asked what a good price for Olive oil per ounce was.

I buy my olive oil at Costco to save on shipping charges. I'm not sure how much I paid since I bought a lot, but it was cheaper than ordering it online.

Yup...I've found Costco to be the best price too...er, Sam's Club here. *Loved* the Costco when we lived in Cali. For olive, and soy. Ours just started carrying pomace, so that will be on the list of things to try soon.

I get olive pomice from a GFS ( a restraunt supply store ) for about $16 for a true gallon. They are about 3 miles down the road from me. But that is the only oil I get from them. In all I use 4 or 5 different suppliers for my oils. Best price and good quality gets my buisness.
