I figure the answer is absolutely not but just in case I'm wrong - is it possible to add fragrance and color to a rebatch once it reaches the mashed potato consistency?

Absolutely YES! There are a couple tutorials here and we add both to each of them. =)

Note these were made with an unscented and uncolored rebatch soap base. If your base already has color and fragrance you will want to take that into account. You don't want over fragranced soap.

If the problem with the original batch was just that it was ugly or not as expected (as opposed to being lye heavy etc) You can also shred or chop your "bad" soap into a fresh new batch. I've used this trick when I've over-colored or otherwise made something I just didn't like. And more often than not I end up with something better than I ever could have done on purpose.

Yes! Exactly! It is just ugly. It seized on me and seeing as it was the second batch I had ever made, I didn't know enough techniques and didn't know how to work with thicker trace.
I will indeed chop it up and melt it down and see what happens. It actually smells good but the colors are horrid so I need to add some color!

Just to be clear - what I'm suggesting won't actually melt down the ugly batch. it will just result in the ugly soap being sort of embedded in a fresh new batch. But if you use a vegetable grater or salad shooter etc this can result in quite a lovely effect.

I once added WAYYY too much yellow colorant to a large batch of soap so I shredded that into fine curly shreds and added that to an uncolored salt bar recipe with a lemon fragrance. The color from the "bad" batch leeched into the uncolored soap just beautifully leaving the darker yellow curls against a pale yellow background. I've been making that recipe on purpose ever since and calling it "Lemon Zest". You could have a similar effect by shredding or chopping your ugly soap and putting it into a fresh batch with a coordinating or contrasting color. Experiment and see what happens!

Of course you also have the traditional rebatch method where you use a crockpot or similar to melt the soap and try to rescue it... but I've rarely been happy with those results.
