Hi,

I have recently made a shea butter soap with the following ingredients and combination.

Shea Butter Bar
Palm Oil (25%)
Coconut Oil (15%)
Shea Butter (21%)
Castor Oil (10%)
Avocado Oil (25%)

When the oils were mixed with lye, it traced very fast, less than 10min. Or I think it was trace.. Is the ingredient OK? Have I put too much of shea butter?
When I check the soap, it is still wet after 4 days.

For me, that would be too much shea butter. 5-7% is usually the norm.
Castor oil is a soft oil. That could be why the soap feels wet. You don't need to go that high.
Avocado oil is considered a soft oil also.
10% castor oil can speed up trace.
I would leave it be for now and give it a nice long cure of 4-6 weeks.

Thanks for the reply!

So I just leave the soap in the mold for now? And only cut it after 4 weeks? :)

Cheers

Leave it in the mold til it's hard enough to cut.

That is a lot of soft oils, a long cure will definitely be a good idea. :D

We have some posts here on formulating recipes and oils properties that may be helpful!

Will a soft soap harden significantly with a long wait . I have two earlier made soaps that are still soft . I was wondering if I could rebatch them as salt soap
I am still learning and getting my recipe together
I have made all the mistakes so far , over heated soap , lye pockets, and one just ugly bar
I rebatched one as a yogurt soap . My favourite rebatch is coffee soap , I have a a group of friends who love my coffee soap . Thank Goodness

Only one ugly bar, Debra! Then you must not be trying hard enough - lol!

All soaps will get harder with time - due not only to curing, but the evaporation of water.
There is a limit, though, to how hard any particular recipe will get.

A recipe with a lot of soft oils will never harden as much as one with a better balance of hard to soft oils.

I use the same recipe for all my soaps, and I find that some FOs will limit how hard my soap gets. I recently made two batches the same day - everything identical except for the FO. One of them is still way softer than the other, even after 8 weeks. It is selling well, though. It isn't soft, really - but not nearly as hard as the other.
