Teach Soap

Hi, I am getting ready for my first attempt at CP soap. I have read and read and think I am finally starting to understand it a bit. I wondered, before I order all my supplies- I was thinking about this mold http://www.brambleberry.com/10-Silicone ... P5199.aspx and saw that it has a 50 oz capacity. I would think from viewing people that make soap that you don't want to fill it to the top. Would I maybe want to go for something that's 35 or 40 oz of finished weight? I do know to use the lye calculator with whatever recipe I try. I also have read about safety issues and want to thank Soap Buddy for all her wonderful sticky posts here. I had no idea about some things, like not using glass for lye water.

You can fill it to the top if you like. It just depends how tall do you want the bar to be.

I love that mold, it's the one I use all the time. I just bought a second and I'll probably be back for a third. It's really easy to get the soap out of it. You can definitely fill it up all the way to the top, I always do that.

One word of advice about this mold. This mold absorbs fragrance oils so you need to wash it thoroughly after you're done. I made soap with lots of fragrance and I didn't wash it out right away (I get really lazy with clean up haha). I left the empty mold sitting out for a few days. I then washed the mold, dried it, and then used it for a fragrance free soap. When I pulled that soap out of the mold it smelled a bit like the first soap I made. So now I wash the molds out as soon as possible.

I got all my stuff this evening and am going to attempt to make my first CP soap tomorrow. I was going to go with a 30/30/30/10 recipe but now I am second guessing the oils I bought lol. I got the correct ones I think for the most part: palm, olive, and coconut, but then I had bought canola for the third. I was reading more tonight and saw that canola can be a good sub for olive oil. I was going to do my recipe with a 5% superfat with those oils, but if I use this recipe am I really only just basically increasing the ratio of olive oil in a way by using the canola? Color me confused and worried lol.

I would do a 7-8% superfat. I don't use canola at all due to possible DOS issues.

We made soap tonight! First time. But we were so nervous that we forgot the FO LOL! Oh well now we have a loaf of Plain Jane right? Anyway we followed your advice as closely as possible and are very grateful for it. We will see in a couple of days what the results are. Thank you again!

Nothing wrong with plain jane. Next time, put your fragrance inside the mold so you don't forget.
