Teach Soap

Hey guys! Just wanted to see if this is a weird thing or an open secret. My neighbor swears by using Crayola crayons, melted in a carrier oil for coloring her CP soaps... wouldn't ya know, they're gorgeous. They're just for her personal use, but, is this something any of you guys do? I wouldn't even know how to put that on a label! When I asked her about it she just laughed and said, "Well, honey, it says non-toxic! If kids can eat 'em, I'm sure you can soap 'em."

For sale, no! For personal use whatever. Crayons are not meant for this purpose and your product would be considered misbranded.

Ok! I just tried a small batch to test it out. I melted chunks of Crayola Crayons in sweet almond oil and then mixed them into a CP bastile batter.

Orange: So far, stayed true.
Red: Muted to a pale red/dusty dark pink
Purple: Didn't hold... at all.
Green: I used the same amount of crayon&oil, but the green isn't as strong as I would have expected.
Blue: Has turned to a beautiful denim blue.

My neighbor isn't in this week, she's on a cruise, but when she gets back, I'll ask her how she got her purple. I'm thinking it might be just a blend of the red and blue. I would have done more colors, but the puppy got out and by the time I corralled her back in, my soap was starting to thicken too much. I figured yellow is a fairly straight forward color to get anyway. Also, there was some acceleration in the green. Updates to come!

I agree, Irena. I wouldn't dare sell soap made with crayons. It's a neat concept though and for the personal soap maker, it might be a cost effective way of adding some color to their soaps.

Yes, for personal use its definitely cheaper than micas and dyes. Post some pics when you get a chance!

Its really not that much cheaper, when you have to use a lot, most colors you wouldn't want to use. Mica's I get 2-5.00 each, and last 20=50 uses... or more! I rather be safe. non toxic or not, they are not aproved for soap. Just because its non toxic, doesnt mean you want it on your skin, or COULD become toxic when mixed with lye...
