Teach Soap

Hi,

I am a new soaper. My first batch with the brambleberry beginner kit came out great even though I altered the recipe slightly for a different size batch.

This is the recipe I used.

400 grams lard
350 grams olive oil
50 grams castor oil
150 grams coconut oil

superfat 5%
131.7 grams lye 300 grams H20

olive oil was purchased locally HEB brand light virgin OO all others from brambleberry

Soap has been unmolded and cut and is currently curing in the back room. Time will tell.

This is the weird part. The only colors I added were blue and green. Color is not really important to me, I only use to distinguish different batches at this time. What I wanted and expected was a very light blue as it was added first. I added green after to enhance color a bit. What I got was a very odd shade of purple. Used honeysuckle fragrance oil from BB amount calculated with their FO calc for light scent. It smells great.

Any ideas about what caused the strange coloration? The soap was solid but still a bit soft at cutting but no pockets of liquid anywhere.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will use the soap regardless of color but would like to troubleshoot to avoid repeats and obtain a predictable result.

Some colors can morph, frangrance oils can alter colors. Color of oils can change the look as well too.

What colourants did you use? Some are only "stable" in melt and pour or hot process soap and are morphed into new colours by the pH of active lye. I made a lovely pale purple lavender soap once, and it morphed to a pretty green! Luckily my family don't care what colour gets them clean LOL
