Is technical grade lye good enough for soaping? I was wondering about this 50lb bag sitting in my living room.

That is a *LOT* of LYE!!! :shock:

Does it say 100% lye on the bag?

If it does, the only thing I can think is over time, the lye could absorb moisture and make it heavier, and skew your measurements...

Yes, it will be fine in soap. I would put it in a bucket with a tight fitting lid, so no moisture can get to it.

I like the idea of buckets. Do I need a respirator to do the job in?

Whatever safety precautions you use to make soap with, use the same precautions to transfer you lye. :)

I used to buy 100 pounds at a time. Yes, take it out of the plastic bag and put it in a plastic bucket - outside - slowly with googles and mask on. If you can get a hold of the large "damp rid" packets, put one in there to keep the moisture to a minimum.

Technical grade is what I just got from a soap making company, $60 for 50lbs, not bad I think. I just got a 5 gallon bucket and made sure all the grains were down from the top and cut a hole in one top corner and poured, I should have put a mask on though! I did not breath almost the whole time though, now I just got to put some on a smaller container.
