Teach Soap

I have a few of my bars get DOS. The first few I thought Rice Bran was the culprit. Now I have another's batch with a few DOS spots...no more than one on about two bars. Now I'm thinking it might be my Shea Butter. I'm not curing in a dark area. It does get some afternoon sun, but not a lot. Any thoughts?

Are you using any metal containers, spoons etc??? Are they stainless steel? Are your soaps sitting on a metal rack? Is it hot or humid where you are?

No metal spoons or containers. All stainless steel and I'm in the valley of California so not really humid. But now that you mention it, I do have some metal wire racks that I put them on sometimes. Could that be it?

I got DOS once and in a batch of 100% coconut oil/ 20% superfat soap. I made it in individual plastic molds and life interfered so the soap stayed in the molds for over a week. About a month later, the DOS showed up. I'm pretty sure I got DOS because the soap couldn't breathe being in those plastic molds for so long, plus the fact that coconut oil likes to hang on to water longer than other oils. This according to Dr. Kevin Dunn of "Scientific Soapmaking" fame. Sometimes I think the soap gremlins just like to randomly torture us. (sigh)
